The American College of Credit began as the American Institute of Finance and Management in 1979. It was founded by three Certified Financial Planners and two College Professors, who saw  a need for personal  financial education.

They worked together to develop a series of courses, and in 1995 started the Certified Personal Finance Specialist, and in 2000 the Certified Residential Mortgage Consultant.
